Jean Thompson: MBE

Profile:

I have been involved with lay-led self-management since the beginning. I am a Stanford University T-Trainer and Ss2Q Trainer of Lead Trainers. I led the Challenging Arthritis programme and supported voluntary organisations through the Long Term Medical Conditions Alliance (now Long-term Conditions Alliance, LTCA), to develop lay-led generic programmes using the Chronic Disease Self-Management course (CDSMC). This pioneering work provided a blueprint for the development of the NHS Expert Patients Programme (EPP). I was a member of the Chief Medical Officer's EPP Task Force and I led the development and successful implementation of the EPP. Over a period of 5 years I provided strategic and operational leadership to the EPP, through to the establishment of the EPP as a Community Interest Company. I was at the forefront of the development of Ss2Q, the quality assurance framework for providers of Stanford University programmes. In 2005 my contribution to the development of the knowledge base for lay led self-management was recognised with the award of an MBE. I left EPP in October 2007, since then I have worked as a freelance consultant within the field of lay led self-management. I am Chair of the Medicines Information Project Board.
